Subject: 2010 NPPA - Spring 2  Posted by NPPA: 2/22/2010
This Week

As of this week, you have about 10 weeks left to prepare. If you and your study group meet once a week to study, you have about a week and a half left to prepare – Just to put it in perspective!

One of the biggest mistakes people make when preparing for the NPPA is to go straight to the questions when they receive their Study Guide. The typical approach is to employ a multiple choice strategy in answering the questions - after all you are presented with four possible answers. This is a formula for disaster and is very difficult to correct.

A critical Incident (CI) is a mini-case study that requires analysis to determine the “best” of the options presented. LEARN AND PRACTICE THE METHODS OUTLINED IN THE GUIDE!

Last week, I asked you to try using the SCORE method on pages 66-71 of the 2010 NPPA study guide.

Did you try it? Was it helpful? Love it? Hate it?

You can give me feedback on the discussion board of our Facebook group at this link:

Q: There are 7 knowledge areas on the NPPA, should I set aside my study time accordingly?

A:

That depends. I used that approach back when I was preparing for the NPPA, but what I found most efficient was to just figure out my weaknesses and try and build them up.

To determine weaknesses, I did the practice questions on the CCHRA’s online prep course and determined which RPC’s I needed to focus on – a breakdown is provided.

Week 2 Update

As promised last week, I would provide you with a unique CI, so here it is:

A Calgary-based meat processing facility has a high-turnover rate and believes it is based on their compensation levels. In order to get a better understanding of their competitive standing in the market, the company decides to initiate a competitive-compensation review.

Since the company is relatively small, what market reference should their sample come from?

a)     A small group of 10-15 selected food processing plants
b)     A large sampling of the national compensation market comprised of food processors, meat packers, and grocery distribution facilities
c)      A large sampling of the Canadian market comprised of meat processing companies only
d)     A large group of Calgary based meat processing, grocery distributing, and meat packing facilities

Next week I will have the answer for you, so good luck with the rest of your studies this week!
