Subject: 2010 NKE - Spring 4  Posted by NKE: 3/8/2010
Just a little reminder in case you’re not feeling any pressure – there is 8 weeks left until the day of the exam.

What does that mean? It means if you study once a week, you essentially have about 8 days to fill any knowledge gaps; just saying.

If you have yet to use one of the two times access to the online prep tool that came with the 2010 guide, now would be a good time.

All this being said though, don’t panic; Look at the exam date on your calendar and work back from it – you are in control and can still map out the best strategy to make use of your study time.

This Week

This week the focus is on the Staffing knowledge area. When most people think of HR they think of ‘the people responsible for hiring and firing people’ so this chapter fits the stereotypes nicely :P

Despite the stereotypes surrounding HR, staffing is critical to organizational success. Just think, if people were not suited for their jobs, didn’t like their co-workers, had a high turnover rate, etc. the company wouldn’t succeed no matter who the CEO was.

In addition to the information covered in Chapter 3 of The Guide, reviewing Recruitment & Selection textbooks would enhance your studying.

Two pages that you should be particularly focused on are pages 196-7 for the review of Environmental Scanning and Labour Market Analysis.

Week 4 Update

This week, consider why you work where you do.

Say to yourself: ‘I like working at ________ because of ________, ___________, and ____________.’

If you can’t fill in any of those last 3 blanks, you may not be happy in your current role/ company. But you are an HR person, how would you fix this?

In your study groups, discuss what makes a company ‘worth working for’. What factors do you believe would contribute to a stronger retention rate? What would you do to make people want to work for you?

One company you may want to look at for a good example is Google. Check out this link by copying it into a browser: http://www.google.com/corporate/culture.html

If you need help, make a posting under the discussion board topic: NKE Blog – week 4

It will be posted on our Facebook group: Canadian HR Press – Guides & Resources

Well that is my 2 cents for this week.

Good luck in your study groups,
Ian
