How is life? Studying going well?
How did the group exercise last week go with the staffing question? Get any introspection to your group members’ workplaces?
If you have trouble understanding any terminology in the study guide, or a textbook, let me know. I am happy to help clarify any questions you have.
This Week
This week, the focus is a topic that even practicing HR Professionals often say is the toughest part of their jobs: Employee and Labour Relations!
While there may be any combination of feelings surrounding this chapter, you really only care about what is on the exam right?
Well on page 24 of your guide you will see that it accounts for about 10% of the actual exam content – so no need to sweat too much, but important nevertheless.
While in previous blogs I have suggested reviewing external materials like textbooks, websites, magazines, etc. when looking back, I think that the Study Guide perhaps covered the labour relations topic the best in terms of exam prep.
The Guide cuts out a lot of the ‘nice-to-know’ content of some textbooks and delivers you the straight goods!
This isn’t to say don’t review additional materials; I just don’t want to see you overwhelming yourself via information overload.
Week 5 Update
This week, a group exercise worth thinking about is to consider that you are part of the HR Management team for a unionized environment (your choice of industry) and a grievance (your choice again) has been brought forward by an employee.
Now think:
1. What is our role as the HR Management team?
2. What steps do we take, in order, during this process?
3. What do we do if this case goes to mediation? Arbitration?
That’s all I have to say this week. If you do try the exercise above, please share the scenario you came up with on our Facebook group (Canadian HR Press – Guides & Resources) under the discussion board topic: NKE Blog #5.
…‘til next time!
